Massage is the therapeutic practice of rubbing and kneading the muscles and joints of the body, especially to relieve tension or pain. It improves the flow of blood and lymph, reduces muscular tension, affects the nervous system through stimulation or sedation, and enhances tissue healing. Massage is often used to reduce emotional stress. This technique is performed on bare skin using a nourishing massage oil. All body parts not being addressed are kept modestly covered with a sheet and blanket, and the client is kept warm using a heated table. Lisa Smuin, LMT, is the massage therapist at Sage Holistic Health.
